Sarawak is located in Borneo and neighbouring to Indonesia (Kalimantan) plays a role in influencing the food and beverage style. The first Layered Cake, Kek Lapis Legit also known as Kek Lapis Betawi was originated from Indonesia. Sarawak Layered Cakes or Kek Lapis Sarawak slowely evolved into its own unique style and characteristic through inspiration. 

By introducing modern design and traditional layer, coupled with new flavors which inspired from home-made inspiration,each layer is tastefully interlaced with various natural flavours in between the original recipe, modern taste and knowledge from our ancestor. Sarawakian modern layered cakes can be divided into two categories: cakes with ordinary layers and cakes with patterns, motifs, or shapes. All must have at least two colors. The baked cake has a high, firm texture and the layers are fastened together with jam or a similarly sticky sweet substance. The more patterns or motives of the cake, the more time is required to produce the cake and this makes the baking a very labour-intensive process therefore a rather expensive delicacy and that is why the Sarawak Layer Cake may be a bit costly then modern cake.  Sarawak Layer Cakes is enjoyed during  Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year, Christmas celebrations. It is also served or given as gifts in many local festivities, sometimes in birthday partys and weddings.
